Community Food Bank Drop Off

by jimmysbroadwaycom on March 25, 2011

Did you know that we are a year round Community Food Bank drop off  location.  We started in December of  2008 and  hope to grow in our support each year.   So far we have been able to collect 7,572 lbs of food which equalls 5,900 meals.  WOW!  Thank you wonderful Tucson Community for all your donations.  Our goal is that we would collect so much on a weekly basis that they would have to put us on their regular pick-up route each week.  That can happen if we can collect 70 lbs of food each week which is 2 boxes full.

Please help us support our community by bringing in any non-perishable food items or making a cash donation.  Thank you from all of us at Jimmy’s.

Dave, Phyllis, Jack, Kandice, Liza, David, Derek and Vince

We are part of the”Arizona Green Business Automotive Program”

by jimmysbroadwaycom on February 24, 2011

Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive has qualified for the Arizona Green Business Automotive Program.

As you know, all establishments must meet certain environmental standards mandated by the government. Most, reputable businesses, like Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive, make sure they are complying with those standards.  As a “green” Automotive Shop, however, we go beyond those requirements and take additional measures to protect the environment, save resources, and keep Arizona clean.  And, here’s the good news – most of those “green” measures will ultimately save resources and money by recycling materials, reducing repair and maintenance costs, and making our business a safer, healthier place for our employees to work.

Customers and communities increasingly welcome and support environmentally friendly businesses. We are continuing to become greener all the time. One of which is a new double lined box for storing used batteries in until they are picked up by our battery supplier, Interstate Battery.  This keeps them out of the weather so the acid is not washed off and contaminates the neighborhood.  It is properly marked for the drivers but also emergency crews so they know of the hazard that is in the box.

In future posts I will tell you of some of the other green things we have done above and beyond the initial program. As well as planned future improvements.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can continue to show our green program, you can use the “Leave a Comment” box below or contact us via the web.

In the mean time stay Safe and stay Green.

Jimmy’s is 2009 “Best of Tucson”

by jimmysbroadwaycom on September 1, 2009

Tucson Weekly: Best of Tucson 2009

Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive has been fixing cars in Tucson since 1956. This complete auto-repair service station can handle anything from brake pads to engine replacement, and are proud to tout their environment-friendly practices such as recycling used parts and properly disposing of hazardous materials.

Besides fixing that hideous noise coming from somewhere in your car, these guys also give back to the community. They give raffle prizes and auction items to community-organization fundraisers, and the shop serves as a year-round drop-off point for the Tucson Community Food Bank.

They know how to fix any car, how to show love to Tucson, and how to treat customers — they give ladies a flower as a token of appreciation. Whoever says chivalry is dead and mechanics are crooks should check out Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive.

Jimmy’s Broadway celebrates 50th anniversary

by jimmysbroadwaycom on April 1, 2006

We are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive Service. We are also honoring the memory of our founder, Jimmy McDowell, and the legacy of his work ethic. We would like to invite you to our party and share our story with you.

Jimmy was born James Emmett McDowell in Indianapolis Ind. in 1911. By the time of our country’s great depression, Jimmy had already begun his family. As with others at that time, he managed to keep his wife Cora and young family together with odd jobs. He also helped his siblings and mother as their main breadwinner.

As World War II broke out, Jimmy found himself working at a gas station/garage. The owner of the garage decided to close since all his employees were in the war effort. Jimmy struck a deal with him for the business and the equipment. With a growing family and no other choice, Jimmy, with hard work, built up the business. Because of his efforts, Marathon Oil Co. in 1950 built for him a modern new station. His perseverance had begun to pay off.

But by 1951, due to family health issues, Jimmy moved his wife, Cora and their 9 children from Indianapolis to Tucson. He made 39 round trips back to Tucson before selling his business in Indianapolis in 1955.

On Sunday, April 1st 1956, he opened Jimmy’s Service at 6th Street and Tucson Blvd. He often recalled that day. He sold $1.00 of gas to a car and .25 cents to a motor bike.

By 1957 Jimmy’s daughter, Claudia, had married her high school sweetheart, Larry Shinkel. In 1958 Larry went to work for Jimmy. In 1971, Jimmy’s family gave him a surprise 25th open house anniversary party at the station in his honor. One high point that day our customer, Dr. Herb Abrams, stopped by with the Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop, to sign Jimmy’s guest book.

In 1983, Jimmy retired and sold Jimmy’s Service to Larry. By December of 1984 Larry had expanded and purchased Cookey’s 76 Service at Broadway and Tucson Blvd. In 1990 he moved Jimmy’s to the Broadway location and later consolidated both. Larry retired in 1998.

Larry and Claudia’s two sons, Dave and Mike took ownership in 1998 as the third generation and incorporated their grandfather’s name in the business. Mike sold his interest in 2005 to Dave and his wife Phyllis. They have three children, David, Toni and Emmett (who was named after his great grandpa).

This all began in 1941 when Jimmy started his journey that has led us this far. Thanks to his guidance and example, he has taught us how to treat customers and maintain their loyalty, confidence and trust.

The last of Jimmy’s original customers recently passed away last year. Jimmy passed away in 1996. His wife, Cora, preceded him in 1987. Their union has grown to include over one hundred and seventy immediate family members.

We at Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive wish to thank each one of you, our customers for your loyalty and allowing us to share this story with you and to be part of your families over the past 50 years.

Cordially,
The McDowell & Shinkel Families

Tucson Weekly
Published on March 9, 2006
By RENÉE DOWNING

How many Tucson buildings do you love? What do you drive by that makes your day a little prettier, a little happier? How much of the city makes you proud to live here?

Don’t start shouting all at once.

We’ve got a few nice buildings — most of them old churches and government buildings — but in general we Tucsonans are defenseless connoisseurs of crappy design and cut-rate construction. What else do we have to do while we sit in traffic but watch ugly new buildings go up? Today the plywood, next week the aluminum-framed windows and spray-on stucco, topped off by paint in various shades of dreck.

What an unaccustomed pleasure, then, to see a serviceable old building on a major street not only preserved but used, and not only used but loved.

The next time you’re plowing through the clutter and grime of midtown, take a moment to enjoy Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive on the southwest corner of Broadway and North Tucson boulevards. Clean and bright as a new pack of cards, redecorated last year with cheerful retro colors and smashing signage, it’s a delight to the eye and a thriving bit of vintage Tucson. It looks so good it seems, well, out of place.

The shop’s revamped retro look is new as of last summer, but it’s honest: Owner David Shinkel’s family has been in the gas and auto-repair business in the Sam Hughes neighborhood for 50 years. His grandfather, Jimmy McDowell, opened Jimmy’s Service Station at the corner of East Sixth Street and Tucson Boulevard — where Long Wong’s is now–on April 1, 1956. (Yes, next month is the operation’s 50th anniversary.)

Shinkel opened his own shop in the late-’40s era building at 2448 E. Broadway Blvd. — formerly Don Cookey’s Union — as Broadway Automotive in 1984. In the meantime, his father, Larry, had taken over Jimmy’s and continued to operate it until the early ’90s. Then he lost the lease and moved his business in with David’s.

“I always say that it took me 18 years to get out of my dad’s house, and then he came and moved in with me,” Shinkel says.

Eventually they combined the two operations as Jimmy’s Broadway Automotive.

“I wanted to keep my grandfather’s identity,” says Shinkel about the name.

Today Jimmy’s is all about auto repair; they stopped pumping gas in 1996.

“The tanks were getting old and we didn’t want them leaking,” he says. “And it would have cost so much to replace them that everything I made on gas would have gone to straight to the bank. That was a sad day for me. My mother’s family started selling gas back in Indiana in 1923.”

Longevity is a theme at Jimmy’s Broadway. Several employees have worked for one Shinkel or another for more than 20 years, and the shop has customers from the neighborhood who go back even further.

“I think that the last of my grandfather’s original customers died just a couple years back,” says Shinkel.

A friend who’s a graphic designer, Shaun Wolden of Pit Crew Marketing, put together the business’ fresh new look after seeing an office clock with a design by Cook and Company Signmakers, 134 S. Tucson Blvd. That clock, and the pretty yellow-and-blue color scheme that Shinkel’s wife, Phyllis, had established in the station’s “award-winning” restroom were Wolden’s inspiration. He and Shinkel ran with it, coordinating fonts, colors and patterns on the outside to the inside of the building, and on to business cards and the shop’s Web site.

Shinkel, in a grease-free, Jimmy’s Broadway-blue shirt embroidered with the company logo, shows the place off with obvious pleasure. (Stop by anytime for a look at the restroom, which is truly like no service station bathroom you’ve ever seen.)

“It’s nice being a little part of the history of the neighborhood and of Tucson.”
